Extended Hours at Le Local Cooperative Grocery Store: The Best of the Region at Your Fingertips

The Le Local cooperative would like to extend the opening hours of the participatory grocery store to better meet the current needs of the community and ensure the project’s long-term sustainability.

Since its inception, Le Local has been part of a collective, local, and participatory movement serving the Nyon district. Through its cooperative model, the grocery store not only supports local producers but also creates a space for community engagement and discussion on issues related to food, the environment, and the local economy. Extending the hours would make this project accessible to a larger number of residents, particularly those who are currently unable to visit during the limited opening hours. This would strengthen Le Local’s role as a neighborhood store and a vibrant community hub in the center of Nyon. The project also helps to: promote short supply chains and regional products; support a more resilient local economy; encourage more sustainable consumption patterns; maintain a space that fosters social connections and civic engagement; and enable people of different ages and backgrounds to get involved in a concrete community project. Le Local regularly collaborates with various community, cultural, and sustainability organizations in the Nyon region. Over the years, the grocery store has become a space where local exchanges, initiatives, and collaborations flourish. Through this expansion project, the cooperative aims to continue developing a model that is accessible, participatory, and deeply rooted in the region.

Le Local is a participatory, cooperative grocery store located in downtown Nyon, open since September 2019. Born from an initiative by local young people seeking to offer a more sustainable and people-centered alternative to traditional consumption models, the project aims to strengthen ties between producers and consumers while supporting a local and responsible economy.

The grocery store is open to everyone (you don’t need to be a member to shop there). It prioritizes local, seasonal products sourced through environmentally friendly production methods. Goods come primarily from the Nyon district, and more broadly from the Lake Geneva region when certain products are not available locally. A large portion of the selection is sold in bulk to minimize waste and packaging.

Le Local operates as a participatory, nonprofit cooperative. Its model relies on the volunteer involvement of its members, who contribute a few hours each month to the grocery store’s operations. This structure not only helps reduce operating costs but also creates a genuine space for people to meet, exchange ideas, and engage as citizens on food, social, and environmental issues.

Over the years, Le Local has become a recognized player in Nyon’s community and sustainability scene. The grocery store regularly collaborates with local producers, associations, and events, and actively contributes to raising public awareness about more responsible consumption and promoting short supply chains.

Based on a collective model and rooted in strong values, Le Local revitalizes the economy and social life of our region. We offer an alternative to conventional retail: a cooperative grocery store that provides accessible and equitable products, guarantees fair compensation for local producers, and supports local artisanal production—all with complete transparency.

Today, the grocery store is open thanks to volunteer staff Monday through Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., as well as Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In addition, there are tasks involved in opening and closing the store, receiving goods, placing orders, and general coordination.

For several years now, a manager has supported this volunteer work, handling tasks such as placing orders with producers, overseeing the grocery store’s daily operations, organizing volunteer shifts, opening the store alongside volunteers, and managing the numerous administrative and logistical tasks essential to the project’s smooth operation. Since 2025, the manager has also been solely responsible for opening the store on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., before being relieved by volunteers from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

This arrangement has enabled the project to grow sustainably over the past few years. However, the current hours remain limited and no longer fully meet the needs of the clientele or the grocery store’s potential for growth. Many people interested in the project cannot easily access the store due to the limited hours.

To assess the actual needs and potential for extended hours, a trial period was launched in February 2026. During this period, the extended hours were covered entirely by the manager. This trial received very positive feedback, both in terms of customer traffic and organizational efficiency, and confirmed the value of extending the store’s hours.

Furthermore, a sustainable extension of operating hours relying solely on volunteers would require more than double the current number of cooperative members involved in staffing shifts. Given the realities of recruiting and securing volunteer availability, this solution appears difficult to sustain in the long term.

The cooperative is now at a critical stage in its development: in order to consolidate the project, improve its accessibility, and strengthen its economic viability, it has become necessary to extend the grocery store’s daily hours by establishing a stable and permanent management position.

The proposed hours would be as follows, starting in December 2026:

• Monday through Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.;

• Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

This change would make the grocery store more accessible to people working irregular hours, families, seniors, and residents who prefer to shop during the day.

The goal of this expansion is not to replace the cooperative model of Le Local, but to ensure its long-term sustainability. Volunteer shifts would remain at the heart of the project, particularly in the evenings and on Saturdays, which are key times for members to meet and participate.

However, the extended hours require a more consistent daily presence to ensure the store is open, manage orders, monitor fresh produce, welcome new volunteers, and coordinate the grocery store’s overall operations.

The manager’s role already plays a central part in maintaining the project’s balance. The pilot conducted in February 2026 showed that extended hours, supported by an increased staff presence, meet a real demand and make the grocery store more accessible without overburdening the volunteers.

This development represents an important step for the sustainability of Le Local. Extended hours would allow more residents to shop at Le Local, support local producers, and participate in the collective spirit fostered by the cooperative.

This project aligns with the values Le Local has upheld since its inception: support for local producers, access to local and sustainable food, civic engagement, and the fostering of social connections.
